Beschreibung
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, it was built between 118 and 138 A.D. by the Emperor Hadrian in a green, water-rich area near Tivoli, the ancient Tibur.
The villa covered an area of at least one hundred and twenty hectares, including residential buildings, baths, nymphaeums, pavilions and gardens. The various buildings were connected not only by surface paths, but also by an underground network of vehicular and pedestrian roads, functional for services. The richness of the architectural and sculptural decoration of the villa was extraordinary and has been the subject of intense and systematic research since the Renaissance. Almost all the great museums and collections in Rome and the rest of Italy and Europe include among their works pieces from Hadrian's Villa.
Currently, the area that can be visited is about 40 hectares.
