Description

Explore the monuments of Berlin as the city struggles with its controversial past.

What is the past and how should we memorialize it? Recent events around the world have sparked fierce debate around the idea of statues and memorials and how it is that we as a society ought to remember, or sometimes forget, the past.

This walk will lead you to both well-known sites and more hidden backstreet locations as we discuss, debate and engage with Berlin's attempts to "mark" its history. Berlin is a city of memorials and each one addresses the past differently. From traditional statues to abstract art, each memorial tackles the problem differently and on this experience we'll discover these wildly different approaches, share our thoughts and reactions and debate the nature of memory.
